Justice Kavanaugh gave election officials a deadline to respond.
Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh gave Michigan election officials until midday Wednesday to respond to an emergency request for a citizen-only proposal that failed to make it on the state’s ballot. The proposal had exceeded the number of required signatures, but the Michigan Board of Canvassers deadlocked in two votes regarding the ballot initiative.
The initiative would update the state’s constitution to specify that only U.S. citizens may vote. It would require the regular review of voter rolls and photo identification for voters.
The Bureau of Elections found that the number of valid signatures fell just short of the minimum to advance the ballot proposal. The bureau recommended that the submitted signatures be deemed insufficient. After receiving no answer to an appeal to the state’s supreme court, an advocacy group made an emergency request of the U.S. Supreme Court.
